The background score heightens the drama a few times but eventually falls prey to the need to overcompensate for an uninventive script, and doles out one overdone number after the other. It all is but a big frenzied version of Gangs-Of-Wasseypur-meets-Kahaani (interestingly, the producer of this one is actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay who has played a key role in the film 'Kahaani'). There is one drug lord that walks away scott-free, another hired to find the former’s henchmen, then a plain John-ish ruffian Swapan (Chandan Roy Sanyal) comes around to reclaim regional domination. But, a few episodes into this revenge thriller and you already know that writers and co-creators Rohan Ghose and Aritra Sen are struggling with their snipping tool to trim out the non-essential parts and present a story that is both gripping and engaging. Truth be told, ‘Kaali’ shows immense promise in the beginning and has a familiar vibe to it- actors speaking Hindi in thick, adorable Bengali accent and curious cops donning that famous white uniform demanding ‘jushtice’.

The second season of ‘Kaali’ takes the story ahead with skilfully placed flashbacks as and when required but one element of this thriller remains constant throughout: Kaali’s shatterproof resolution to protect her now wheelchair-using teenage son, Sunny.

The other is in Delhi, where the Centre puts in motion a fool-proof plan to send home the deadliest South-East Asian drug lord Kinliang aka Sona (Abhishek Banerjee), who was arrested in Kolkata. ‘Kaali’ has two different timelines-one that depicts Kolkata’s underbelly, which is on the brink of witnessing the biggest drug war for power and territory. But with an international drug kingpin hungry for her blood, corrupt police personnel trying to pin their misdoings on her and a former bootlegger planning a grand thievery with her as the bait, how safe is this otherwise feisty woman going to be once the charade is over? Guess the only way for her to find out is to actually go along with the journey. This Kolkata-born plain Jane is a survivor and when her teenage son has a near-death experience, she takes it upon herself to get him back on his feet and start over. REVIEW: ‘Kaali’ is not your typical gossip-monging parlour waali didi or even the kind of masseuse you frown upon when she reaches home late at night. But is this really the end of her woes or just the beginning of something all the more sinister? The single mother agrees to help an international drug cartel claim their consignment right under the nose of Kolkata Police (KP). STORY: Determined to save the life of her only child, Sunny, Kaali (Paoli Dam) goes to painful lengths and risks her own life.
